The Last Letter

It was a rainy afternoon.

Anna sat by the window, holding an old envelope in her hands.

Her hands were shaking. She looked at her friend, Sarah.

Sarah: “Anna, what is that?”

Anna: “It’s a letter… from my father. I never opened it.”

Sarah: “Why not?”

Anna: “He left when I was ten. I was angry. I didn’t want to read his words.”

Anna looked outside. The rain was falling harder.

Her eyes were full of tears.

Sarah sat next to her.

Sarah: “Do you want to open it now?”

Anna shook her head.

Anna: “I don’t know if I’m ready. What if it hurts?”

Sarah: “Maybe it will help you heal.”

Anna looked at the envelope again. The paper was yellow and soft.

Her father’s handwriting was still clear: “To my dear Anna.”

Anna took a deep breath.

Anna: “Okay… I will open it.”

Her fingers slowly tore the envelope. She pulled out a folded paper.

She started reading:

“My dear Anna,

I am sorry I left. I was not strong. But I always loved you.

I hope one day you can forgive me.

Every birthday, I thought of you. Every night, I prayed for you.

Be strong, my little girl. You are my greatest treasure.”

Anna stopped. She couldn’t read more.

Tears fell down her face.

Sarah: “Anna, he loved you. Maybe he made mistakes, but he cared.”

Anna closed her eyes.

Anna: “I wasted so many years hating him… And now, it’s too late.”

Sarah: “It’s never too late to forgive in your heart.”

Anna held the letter to her chest. She felt something warm inside.

The rain stopped. The sun came out.

Anna smiled a little.

Anna: “I think… I will visit his grave tomorrow.”

Sarah: “That’s a good idea. Take flowers. Tell him everything you feel.”

Anna nodded.

Anna: “Yes. And I will tell him I forgive him.”

The next day, Anna stood by a small grave with white flowers in her hands.

She placed them gently on the stone.

Anna: “Hi, Dad… I’m sorry it took me so long. I forgive you. I hope you can hear me.”

A soft wind passed by, touching her face.

Anna smiled through her tears.

For the first time in many years, her heart felt light.
